Prof. Lai Oi Mingis a Professor inEnzyme Technology from the Department of Bioprocess Technology, Faculty ofBiotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. She is alsoa Research Fellow at the Institute of Bioscience, UPM. She is the coeditor of Healthful Lipids (AOCSPress) and lead editor of Palm Oil: Production, Processing, Characterization,and Uses (AOCS Press) book, author or co-author of more than 130 referenced SCIpublications, more than 10 book chapters and the holder of 16 patents. Oi-Ming’sresearch program includes the development and improvement of structured lipids,upscaling and bioreactor designs and kinetics, and product diversification ofvarious phytonutrients and oilseed by-products. She has led numerous researchprojects and has commercialized two of technologies. In 2008, she won WIPO’s(World Intellectual Property Organization) Best invention by Woman Award andwas the recipient of the Top Research Scientists of Malaysia award from theAcademy of Sciences, Malaysia in 2012. She also sits on the Editorial Board of the Food and BioprocessTechnology Journal, Peer J, Planters, Pertanika Journal of Scholarly reviewsand others. Her h index is 24 as of1 March 2017.
Prof. Chin PingTanis currently leading one of the major research programs at UPM, Fats andOils Technology. His areas of research specialisation are palm oil, foodnanotechnology, food emulsions, microencapsulation and the extraction ofbioactive compounds from various agricultural by-products. In these researchareas, he is responsible for managing 20 research projects for variousgovernment and private agencies with a total funding of more than RM7.5million. In addition, Tan has secured more than 30 consultation projects fromvarious private companies and government agencies. These projects are focusedon new product development, the development of value-added processes andproducts and quality and safety issues related to fats and oils. To date, hehas published one joint-edited book, ten book chapters and over 260 scientificarticles in peer-reviewed journals, has filed more than 20 patents and haspresented more than 250 papers at various national and internationalconferences. Furthermore, Prof. Tan’s research impact can be observed from thecitation data provided by Scopus.com. His published works have been cited morethan 4000 times, and his h-index is 35 as of 1 July 2017 (from www.scopus.com).Prof. Tan has received more than 40 national/international research awardsthroughout his research career. In recognition of his high-quality research, hewas awarded the Young Scientist Award, the Excellent Researcher Award and theScientific Paper Award by UPM in 2006, 2011 and 2013, respectively. He was alsothe recipient of the 2010 ProSPER.Net Scopus Young Scientist Award, was a TWASYoung Affiliate for 2010-2014 and was awarded the German S&T Fellowship in2010. He was recognised as one of the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM)by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM). He is currently one of the membersof the Young Scientists Network of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Since2011, he has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the College of Science,King Saud University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
